EXHIBITION - MPa HAIR SHOP DÜSSELDORF

PLASTICPRODUCT × YŌDA HAIR

October 17–31, 2026

YŌDA HAIR, Düsseldorf, Germany

Seoul-based creative collective PLASTICPRODUCT presents MPa Hair Shop Düsseldorf in collaboration with YŌDA HAIR in Düsseldorf, Germany.

The project is an exhibition and performance centered on the everyday act of cutting hair and the conversations that naturally take place in a hair salon.

Extending PLASTICPRODUCT's approach of examining and reconfiguring familiar objects and actions from new perspectives, the project brings this practice into the setting of a working hair salon.

Opening Performance - dictee

During the opening performance, dictee,on October 17, two participants sat facing each other while hairstylist Kazunori Yōda moved between them, cutting their hair alternately. The three engaged in casual conversation, much like in an ordinary hair salon, but each spoke a different native language. Throughout the haircut, conversations and ambient sounds were captured in real time. Sound performers positioned in a separate space extracted words and sentences from the recordings, isolating, repeating, and rearranging them into new sonic compositions. Simultaneously, the haircut was transmitted live to another room through a video-conferencing system. Automatically generated subtitles appeared on screen, shifting between three different languages in real time. Rather than simply reproducing the spoken conversations, the process of translation introduced errors and misinterpretations, creating discrepancies between what was said and what was displayed. The same conversations were therefore experienced in multiple forms: as spoken voices, reconstructed sounds, live video, and continuously changing subtitles. Visitors were free to move throughout YŌDA HAIR, experiencing a single act of haircutting through different spaces and media.

MPa Haircut & Product Development

Beyond the opening performance, the project also proposes MPa Haircut itself as a product, extending PLASTICPRODUCT's practice of reinterpreting everyday functions into the act of receiving a haircut.

Rather than presenting hairstyling solely as a service or as the subject of a performance, MPa Haircut is offered as something visitors can directly experience and purchase.

A series of garments and objects reinterpreting the clothing and tools used in hair salons was also developed specifically for the project.

The connected robes were designed to be worn individually or joined together, allowing two people to share a single structure.

The haircutting capes can also be connected through zippers, with transparent pockets on the front that allow wearers to view their phone screens while having their hair cut.

A leather bag inspired by the tool bags used by hairstylists was also created.

Following the opening performance, visitors can continue to purchase MPa Haircut services and the specially developed products at YŌDA HAIR throughout the exhibition period, until October 31.

In this way, the project extends beyond a one-time performance, allowing the everyday activity of the hair salon to continue as part of the exhibition.

MPa Hair Shop Düsseldorf connects the everyday service of hairstyling with conversation, language, sound, video, clothing, and space. Through the performance and the products developed alongside it, the project invites visitors to reconsider familiar acts, objects, and services through new forms and relationships.
