Artists often leave their homelands for many reasons, seeking opportunities, training or new audiences. Members of JustArt Collective, including our founder, moved from Hong Kong to the UK as part of their artistic journeys. This issue asks how an artist’s original culture continues to shape their work and what being based abroad means for identity and practice.

The UK hosts artists from across the world, while many British artists also relocate between cities and countries. What drives these moves? How do opportunities, networks, funding, education and personal circumstances influence where artists choose to live and work? Crucially, does this mobility strengthen cultural and artistic exchange, or does it risk diluting local traditions?

In this edition, we explore the flows that shape contemporary art: migration, travel, residencies and the networks that connect people and ideas. We consider how movement changes artistic languages, creates hybrid identities and fosters dialogue across cultures, and we ask what is gained and what may be lost as artists move through the world.
